Subscriptions: Scaled

Host Nick Fredrick is CEO and founder of Rebar Technology and has decades of experience in the subscription industry.

As most if not all podcasts in this list, Fredrick invites industry leaders and experts to sit down and talk about their experience, provide insights and give tips on a wide variety of topics. Fredrick is a very good interviewer (and possibly editor) and thus, his conversations are very insightful and provide many best practices.

Aside from many subscription-focused topics such as analytics, chargebacks and fraud, retention, churn and more, Subscription: Scaled also presents subscription companies and therefore gives insights into more specific challenges and opportunities for companies in the pet food, toy or even oral care field.

Subscription Stories

Robbie Kellman Baxter consults companies with subscriptions, pricing, digital communities and freemium models and has 21 years of experience across different industries.

Her podcast is a well structured and insightful sitdown with business leaders who share their best practices, successful examples and insights into subscription and membership models.

The podcast focuses a lot on the interview partners, Kellman Baxter gives them the stage and guides them with well-prepared questions and follow-ups. It’s a very pleasant listen and by giving interview partners space to talk, there’s a lot of great insights to take from each episode.

Subscription Talks

Subscription business is very innovative and diverse in Denmark, so for any Danish-speaking subscription experts, this podcast presented by consultant agency Subscrybe (one of our partners) might be of interest.

Senior Partner and Director of Denmark for Subscrybe, Jonas Juul Jeppesen hosts and talks to colleagues, partners and friends to talk about subscription business models in general and specifically for the Danish market.

Since the podcast itself is in Danish and I therefore could not listen to episodes to give my opinion. However, this podcast comes highly recommended by my Danish colleagues.

  • Language: Danish
  • Website: https://subscrybe.com/podcast/
  • Length: Usually around 60 minutes
  • Frequency: Irregular, usually at least once a month
  • Where can you listen: Apple, Spotify, Overcast, Pocket Cats, Amazon Music, Castro, Castbox, Podcast Addict, Player FM, Deezer

Lennart Schneider is a consultant for subscription strategies as well as newsletter- and community building. His German podcast covers different subscription models but also has a big focus on the German publishing world which is its own, very distinct beast.

Especially for German businesses or businesses who want to expand to Germany (and have at least one person who speaks German), this podcast gives unique insights about pricing strategies, community building, cooperations and customer experiences.

By the way, this podcast comes recommended from my colleagues from plenigo, a Billwerk+ company that offers subscription management software for German publishers.

  • Language: German
  • Website: https://www.subscribe-now.de/
  • Length: 60 – 90 Minutes
  • Frequency: Usually at least twice a month
  • Where can you listen: Amazon Music, Spotify, Apple Podcasts

The Toolkits Show

To give English-speaking readers a podcast that also covers a lot of topics for media and publishing companies, The Toolkits Show (recommended by Lennart Schneider from Subscribe Now-podcast) is a fantastic listen.

Toolkits is a media company that provides reporting, analytics and research on content businesses.

The podcast is hosted by Toolkit founders Jack Marshall who has nearly 20 years of experience in the world of digital content and journalist and content product leader Shareen Pathak.

The podcast does not just offer insights and best practices but also acts as a great way to stay updated on current market trends, news and activities across the content world. They talk about cooperations, investments, AI-trends and more.

They are not scared to analyse and speculate on interviews, partnerships and investment decisions from big and small players which makes this an incredibly interesting podcast to learn about businesses from a strategic side.

With a very snappy average length of 30 minutes (a rare occurance in this list ;), you can easily put this on between meetings or while doing manual tasks.

Subscription Radio

Subscription Radio was a podcast developed by Joel Van Horn (co-founder/CTO of Rodeo) and Ben Fisher (Startup founder).

The two invite experts and business leaders to talk about different subscription topics, often with a focus on DTC (direct-to-consumer) businesses. They also cover topics that connect to subscriptions but are more general, such as webpage optimization, work culture, etc.

With mostly three podcast speakers, I’d suggest to listen to Subscription Radio when you can fully focus on it. The episode length also varies a lot, with some episodes being 20 minutes long and others over an hour. Unfortunately, the show’s last episode was published in November 2023, so it’s safe to say that the podcast has ended but there is a good backlog of episodes with very interesting topics to get into.

  • Language: English
  • Website: https://subscriptionradio.com/
  • Length: 30 – 60 Minutes
  • Frequency: Last episode aired November 2023
  • Where can you listen: Spotify, Amazon, Breaker
